Investing in Solar Energy

The BuyGist:

  • Will Solar Energy ever take off? Today, it represents just 2% of total power generation globally.
  • Almost every projection says it will take off in the next few years - by a factor of 3X, 4X, 5X.
  • That's because costs of solar panel components and of electricity storage units have decreased dramatically over the last 10 years.
  • So, where should we invest? Solar Panel Manufacturers, Battery Technology companies or Power Companies that are decisively betting on Renewable Energy. No room for hedged bets.

Walking on Sunshine

It’s about time that The Buylyst has a worldview on Solar Power. Renewable Energy, in general, is a big theme for us. We’ve taken definitive bets, directly via investments in Vestas and Terraform. But we’ve also taken lateral bets in “the green revolution” through ABB, Ford and Volvo – companies that have bet the farm on Electrification.

At The Buylyst, we like playing “the right sports”. You’ll see below that Solar Energy looks like an unstoppable force. But it’s never that easy, is it? It’s not enough to find trends. Sometimes trends don’t translate into good investments, either because the enthusiasm is already priced in or because companies simply don’t have pricing power, thereby leading to razor-thin margins. This worldview article lays the foundation for any potential investments in Solar Energy.
